Description
Sound Meter Pro is the 4th app in the Smart Tools® collection. It combines two measurement tools in one app: an SPL (sound pressure level) meter that estimates noise level in decibels (dB) using your phone’s microphone, and a vibrometer that estimates vibration intensity using device sensors.
Note About Versions (Newer App Available)
The developer states that a newer advanced version called Smart Meter Pro is available. Sound Meter Pro will still receive updates, but new users are encouraged to consider the newer version.
SPL Sound Meter: Decibel Estimates Using the Microphone
The sound meter uses your device microphone to measure noise volume in dB and shows reference levels to help you interpret results. The developer notes they calibrated many Android devices against a real sound level meter and uses dB(A) weighting for measurements.
Important Accuracy Limits (Phone Microphone Constraints)
Phone microphones are optimized for human speech (roughly 300–3400 Hz, often around 40–60 dB). Because of manufacturer limits, very loud sound levels (often 100+ dB) may not measure correctly or may hit a hard cap that varies by phone model. The app is most trustworthy for typical everyday noise levels (about 40–70 dB) and works best as an auxiliary/reference tool rather than a certified meter.
Vibrometer: Vibration and “Seism Detector” Style Readings
The vibrometer uses built-in sensors to measure vibration (and can behave like a basic seism detector). The app relates values to the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale as a reference. Because sensor sensitivity differs widely across devices, results can vary; the app allows calibration so your maximum reading lands around 10–11, but you should still treat results as approximate.
